Earlier in the year we finished a registration of interest site for the Gardiner Apartments. Following on from that, the full site is dynamic, engaging and user friendly and it showcases a lot of content in a clean and accessible way.
Working with Matt from Cornwell, we're really happy with the result. Clean image transitions, a little well placed Flash and great content really help pull it all together.

Our relationship with Jazzhead/Head Records goes back almost 10 years. We've enjoyed working on dozens of artists sites, promotional projects, email newsletters, websites, ecommerce and more.
A refresh of the two main sites was getting to be a little overdue. We've worked closely with Andrew, Sheena and the team to be able to create a CMS driven website that gives them much better control of their content. When adding a new artist, the CMS has been customised to allow for copy, album artwork, mp3's and links for iTunes and fulfillment options for online purchasing. Outside of the artist pages, there's a live search facility, newsletter subscription option and a blog!
We're really happy with the result for the two sites and think it's only going to help Jazzhead and Head Records get the good tunes message out there :)

We've been flat out and unfortunately our posts have decreased over the last few weeks. Why you ask? Well we're happy to announce one of the premium sites that have been chewing up our time of late...more in the next post ;)
The Australian National Academy of Music
"The Australian National Academy of Music (the Academy) is Australia’s premiere institution for training the country’s finest young classical musicians."
It was a real pleasure working for a premiere institution like The Academy and without a doubt their South Melbourne location is one of the more stunning offices I've visited. The Academy previously had a site built entirely in Flash that was no longer serving their needs. The brief was to create a site that could be content managed, improve search engine visibility and allow their audience access to information easily and without fuss.
We worked very hard with Melinda, Matt and the team at The Academy to create a site with intuitive and user-focused navigation that was search engine friendly and had the ability to be updated easily. Using the Efront CMS (content management system) the site allows event creation that links into a calendar for easy access throughout the site. Each page and area can be updated, including the banner images, home page content and standard content areas, covering images, text, bookings and dates.
All in all a great result and a success.
More to come....

"For many years Tim and Mark had been providing investment marketers with residential property on a wholesale level. They recognise the lack of service many end clients receive but more importantly, the poor value in pricing that end consumers face.
Acknowledging they have superior product and pricing to go direct to the market they embarked on a strategy to “cut out the middle man” and deliver a sound service to match. They embarked on delivering a complete property investment service that will manage an investment purchase from start to end including land and construction, taxation, finance, legal and property management. A true one stop shop that any consumer or partner could interface with."
Property 10 is the result of this work and partnership. It's been great working with Tim, Mark, Ange and the team. With design assistance from Bec Smith at Gamma Ray the site has come up swimmingly. Included in the site are some hand coded calculators and a newsletter subscription service along with nice clear and accessible content.
Congratulations to all involved and we know it'll be another great addition to the Property 10 arsenal.
Cheers

We've had a great time up here in Port Melbourne. Two years on we've been enjoying the views of the Spirit of Tassie, the Westgate Bridge and Docklands development all the way around to the MCG.
But it's time to move on.
As frustrating as moving is, it's very exciting to outgrow your space. With four of us sharing the studio in Port Melbourne, we're now ready for some room to stretch our legs and step things up a notch.
(Even Harry has taken to sleeping on the external drives...)
We're looking for a good size (100m2) studio in or around Melbourne and happy to share with like minded professionals, web designers, graphic designers, copywriters ... some of our best work comes from collaboration!
So, if you hear of anything suitable or know anyone looking to share a big space, drop us a line...regardless, have an ace weekend :)

I've said it before and will happily say it again. It's a great to be able to work with premium content, design, photography, architecture...all these and more have a place on the new SC Land website.
Having just completed a job with Cornwell Design for SC Land's HUE development, it was great to get to work on their own website. Working with talented designers is always a treat and this job was no exception, Mel at Cornwell has followed up a beautiful job on the HUE site with some great work on the SC Land website. The new site gives an overview of the company, introducing the visitor to its' principals, listings of awards, news and most importantly other SC Land projects.
We had a great time bringing the site to life and think the end result is fantastic.
Have a great long weekend.

After hard work on all sides of the table, we're proud to announce our two latest sites from two very different clients.
Adams Management are an artist management service that look after some great acts. Broadcasters, comedians, writers, film makers and actors all help make up the swag that Liz and Jess help promote and book every day. We met Liz Adams and her team late in 2007, learning quickly that their current site wasn't meeting their needs anymore we looked to a new setup for them. The build gave Adams' a custom Content Management System and blog functionality, along with a fresh new design for their website, allowing Jess and Liz better control over their online content.
It's been excellent working with Liz and Jess and we're all rapt with the outcome.

SC Land are an award winning boutique property development company headed by Harvard-trained architect Lance Chu and his wife and co-director Chenghan Tan. Efront was proud to partner with Cornwell Design to bring to life a new site promoting SC Land's newest development - HUE.
A unique site built entirely in Flash - www.hue.com.au allows the visitor to navigate through a backdrop of great photography highlighting the HUE development. Main navigation along the bottom let's the busy visitor jump straight to the section of interest, whilst contact and enquire options are the call to action and available throughout each pop-in window. Take a look for yourself and enjoy the scrolling!

We're happy to announce that our newest online store has gone live!
www.sankofa.com.au
Sankofa is an on-line store for quality, handmade ethically traded products. Here you will find traditional and contemporary textiles, beautifully handcrafted baskets, homewares and accessories, jewellery, children’s clothing, toys and beads, as well as delicious fair trade coffee and chocolate.
We had a great time working with Kym from Sankofa over the last couple of months. As the products have come in, Kym has been getting images, working them through Photoshop and adding great copy on all her products. The store is hooked up directly Westpac and their Web Advantage system, assuring secure, trouble free transactions. Kym is supporting the launch of her store at various markets, you can currently catch her at the Suzuki Night Market, Wednesday nights in December!
We wish her all the best with Sankofa and will continue to support her online!

It's a busy time of year for marketing. I was baffled walking into the local supermarket at the start of October and seeing Santa and his bunch of chocolate coated mates being prepped for purchase so early. But I got to thinking it is coming up to Christmas, just because I'm not prepared for it doesn't mean everyone else isn't.
It's the perfect time for businesses to get in touch with customers and provide solutions for some of those purchase concerns! We've been kept busy the last couple of weeks getting into HTML email marketing for a variety of clients. We've been creating emails to cover subscription renewal for Ambulance Victoria, a new line of mens shirts from Jack Bootle, climbing equipment from the guys at Cliffhanger, new tunes from Jazzhead and services from Film Victoria.
It's great seeing good responses from these email campaigns. To drop an email in front of someone at the right time can mean a definite sale for that online store or visit to that website. Email newsletters with Efront makes the whole process easy, including :

We're pleased to announce the launch of the YarraLoch website.
YarraLoch produce wines here in Victoria and have received outstanding reviews across their range.
Their website features detailed tasting notes, wine reviews and an online order form. The site has been designed around YarraLoch's existing branding and highlights the premium quality of their product.
We've incorporated some AJAX features to help break up the text heavy areas and to minimise scrolling. The order form features a secure checkout with 128 Bit SSL encryption. This allows YarraLoch to sell directly but eliminates the need for a full shopping cart workflow.
It's been great working with Steve, Libby, Luke and Oliver from the YarraLoch team and we're looking forward to helping them do better on the web ongoing...

In the same way you go to a designer for the look and feel and a web developer to build your website, a copywriting service is there if you have something that needs to be said. Be it on a brochure, a billboard or a website, clear and concise language is important. Big Words have years of experience as copywriters providing concise and relevant copy for corporations, companies and individuals.
Branding and design were provided by Luke Gerner (www.lukegerner.com) and we were lucky enough to work on getting the website, hosting and email sorted out. We're more than happy with the result and know where we'll be going when we run out of ... you know....

The Apple iPhone is scheduled to launch in Australia in 2008. We're already testing our website development for the iPhone to make sure they work as expected.
The iPhone uses a version of Safari web browser engine, so the iPhone can display web pages in their full glory rather than a bland cut down version that's just made for mobile.
Designing a website that will work great on the iPhone doesn't mean any significant changes to the development process. We've been testing our sites for the iPhone over the last few weeks and incorporated that into our normal development cycle. This means our clients can be sure that their websites will look as great on the iPhone as they do on the desktop.

The advent of social networking sites has meant that businesses now have a whole new way to get in touch with potential clients. In the past, to develop an online 'community' or interest group, the best way to spark discussion was to run a forum, or look for feedback through traditional methods like online forms and emails. These all fell prey to the problems of moderation, checking of comments and constant monitoring. Facebook, MySpace, Digg and the like all bring with them new ways for communities, groups and businesses to encourage participation and share their messages online.
It's been great helping out Tim and the guys at Cliffhanger Climbing Gym first with a new online store and now with a redesign of Cliffhanger's MySpace page. We're looking forward to getting to work on the new site soon, watch this space...

At this stage we've just setup a placeholder for BBB and we're looking forward to getting to work on their website. We're also looking forward to trying out their coffee...I'm sure the meeting will be 'up tempo'. So, watch this space for a new site from the team behind St Ali.

We recently had the pleasure of meeting with Liz and Jess from Adams Management who are a Melbourne based company that represent twelve of Australia's best media performers, think - James Brayshaw, Paul Calleja, Liz Ellis, Kate Langbroek, George McEncroe, Tony Moclair, Dave O'Neil, Mark O'Toole, Emma Race, Adam Rozenbachs, Julian Schiller and Matt Tilley.
The Adam's Management's website has been up for a few years now and is in need of an upgrade. Efront will work to provide Liz and her team with a new site that will give them the flexibility they're after, letting them publish news and events through a corporate blog along with a content management system to help them keep the whole site up to date. We'll also be working hard to upgrade the site's look and feel, making sure it has an aesthetic to match the caliber of the company.
It's going to be a great job, it's always exciting working with people who know what they're after. Stay tuned for more news on Adams Management soon.
All the best,
Mark

DesignLive specialise in building automation, window furnishings and contract joinery. Looking through the work this company does will help give you an understanding of how much of a specialty area it is. Bringing together architects, designers, developers, engineers and corporations to create a unique 'smart' building is no small undertaking.
We were lucky enough to be recently working with Cornwell on the placeholder site for DesignLive. Under tight deadline recently a placeholder was needed to coincide with launch of new products and brand work. A placeholder is normally a single web page, logo and contact details that does just what it says, 'holds' the spot until content and a complete website is finished. The work that we ended up doing with Cornwell was much more than a placeholder site, seven pages and a registration option for people to record their details that hooks up to a database for email marketing.
We think it turned out really well and can't wait to get working on the full website for DesignLive.

Most people wouldn't be aware that Google has a main search result database and a supplemental database (I'm using the term database rather than index, to help keep the explanation simple).
When you search for something in Google, it will generally only return results from its main database. If your query is obscure or there are not many results, Google may dip into its supplemental database to give you a few more results.
The supplemental database has had negative connotations within the search engine optimisation community. Often sites, that have been penalised by Google will have their web pages dumped into the supplemental results database. Other reasons can relate to lack of quality back links to those pages making them less important than other pages. Either way, it's not considered a good thing because your pages are unlikely to be shown in normal query results.
The problem is that your website is at the mercy of Google - if they decide that your pages should be in the supplemental index, then that's it. Don't panic though, it's not necessarily permanent. Generally new web pages will start out in the supplemental database, which is also often referred to as 'the sandbox'.
Results coming from the supplemental database have an additional note in their listing within Google - "supplemental result".... well at least until a few weeks ago.

We've written in the past about our thoughts on MySpace. No matter what you reckon about the most visited site on the planet, you cannot deny the benefit it has to people in the music industry. Be they band or individual artist, a profile can be set, tunes can be posted and if done right, a good image can be portrayed.
Winterun are a band that have spent the last five years in Melbourne building a strong cult following. Heavy rocking blues or tunes that are like "logs let loose down the mountainside", these guys are good. A huge live following and their passion for what they do has brought the boys from Melbourne to the release of a new single Stompa from their forthcoming album : Into The Underground.
Efront had the pleasure of working with Winterun on their new MySpace page recently and we're chuffed with the results. Check it out, listen to the new track Stompa but most importantly when you get a chance, check out these fellas live 'cos if you like your rock... you're gonna get into Winterun.

I recently read an article by Clicktale called "Unfolding the Fold". Clicktale are a web stats and usability group that specialise in monitoring web users beyond the normal hits/visitor approach. They actually let their customers watch every action a visitor takes on their site, by recording movies of each visitors actions, these films show hotspots, where the mouse hovers and how a visitor navigates and interacts with the site. In its own right, a great service, though I'm not writing to sell it.
In the years that we've been working on the web, we used to work hard to make sure that content remained above the fold. This refers back to the broadsheet newspaper, where the biggest and most important headline gets the top of the page and content that went below the fold was considered second rate news. The same applied to the web, as with lots of new media, the web took this at face value and many sites were originally designed to be able to present all the information without scrolling anywhere.
Clicktale has now given us some great evidence that this is no longer the case. From Nov-Dec last year Clicktale studied 120,000+ page views and their habits and I quote :
"These statistics demonstrate that the vast majority of web designers are designing pages with scrolling, that the majority of users do scroll and that a significant portion of them scroll all the way to the page bottom. While 22% may seem low at first, it is actually quite high as many page-views are repeat views where the visitors have previously scrolled all the way to the page bottom and are already familiar with the page. In addition, visitors often find what they are looking for near the beginning of the page and may not bother scrolling further down. "

If you're serious about getting a better ranking in Google you need to invest some time in checking your website statistics.
At a minimum, your stats will give you an idea if your site is generating more or less traffic. If your visitor numbers are growing, then a little more digging will help you understand how visitors are coming to your site and what they are looking for.
Mention the word stats and most people start to nod off - so the stats talk stops there.
There are some great tools however that can help you understand the phrases and words used by visitors coming from search engines. One tool which we use across many of our sites is free and is provided by 103Bees.com.
You add some code to your webpages and this system will keep an eye out for visitors coming from search engines. Like little worker bees, the system gathers the search terms that people have used and stores them so you can analyse later.
If you blog regularly, it's amazing to see how quickly you can start to get incoming visitors on different phrases that you may have just blogged about.
We include this functionality into all our new online stores to help owners in developing and targeting their content.

Unfortunately things don't have to be well designed to be popular. Never has this been more the case (on the web) than with the social networking juggernaut that is MySpace. The most highly visited site on the web, 50 million and counting, commands respect purely through its' staggering number of unique visitors.
Being mostly Generation X staffers at Efront, we've tried to stay away from MySpace for some time now mostly because it makes us feel old....but really for two main reasons :

There are a lot of web design companies out there that promote search engine optimisation (SEO) services. Many charge a few hundred dollars to optimise your web site for the major search engines.
When they say 'optimise', they mean give your site the best possible chance of being picked up for certain keywords or phrases. While that may sound like it makes sense, it's really only a small part of the search engine equation.
For most SEO services this means changing some code behind your sites web pages which give search engines clues about the content of the page (META tags). They may even go as far as changing page titles. After this they may use a service that resubmits your site a heap of search engines (most of which you would never have heard of) and then send you an invoice for weaving this magic on your website.
Now we don't pretend to know everything about SEO, and realise that a lot has changed since we started developing websites 8 years ago. We know however, there is a lot more that you should expect for your hard earned dollar.
Ranging from dynamic re-writing of your sites urls to be keyword rich, dynamic sitemap generation, search engine referral keyword tracking and how to avoid duplicate content from impacting your ranking.
Let's face it - the purpose of SEO is to increase traffic to your site. When we sit down with a new client, we don't just spend time talking about the design of their new site, we talk about ways in which they can use their website to save time, save money, make sales or improve quality of service.
Real search engine optimisation takes time, crafted content and a serious commitment.
When was the last time you looked closely at your website statistics?
For most people, the answer is "Statistics? I don't think we have them". Like anything in business, if it's not measured and monitored - you have no real control.
Search engine optimisation should be part of any well designed website, not something you add on later. Before you spend money on SEO see how the company you're considering ranks or if they rank at all...
All the best,
David

If you're developing your first website or online store, one of the things you're going to need to consider is where to host your site.
Like anything there are plenty of really cheap options,, most of them however mean sharing space on a server with thousands of other web sites.
The downside is that your site and email can be impacted by other users of the server. If one site gets a large volume of traffic, your site will slow down or the server may even crash.
To ensure our clients get the service they deserve, we invest in exclusive hosting. This means we have dedicated web serving hardware that is reserved for Efront clients.
Our services are located within a state of the art data centre, featuring true 24x7 support, power and network redundancy, and Tier 1 Bandwidth. Backups of your website are performed automatically via nightly, weekly and monthly schedules.
Let's face it, it doesn't matter how great your site is if it isn't online.

It takes time, focus and patience but a great Google ranking is possible.
Kerry Smolarek was selling her chocolate making supplies on eBay 12 months ago. While things were going ok, the amount of time it took to list items, handle sales not to mention the increasing fees, highlighted the need to find a better way to do business online. Another important aspect of moving from eBay is the intellectual property. Owning your own online store means you are not handcuffed to Ebay's pricing or sales policies - and you have a tangible piece of online real estate - hey, let's call it efront-age... :)
Ok enough about all that, I could go on about eBay but....
The Chocart online store has been built from scratch with search engines in mind. Any time Kerry adds a product or category, a number of things happen in the background to make life easier for the search engines, giving her the best chance of a better and broader ranking. Kerry has been diligent in adding recipies and news to the general area of her site - demonstrating to search engines that Chocart is an authority in the area of chocolate making.
Chocart now commands a number 1 ranking for "Chocolate making supplies" on Google.com.au - See for yourself!
While we're happy with this result, we've been busy improving our store model and we're just taking the bubble wrap off version 3. This online store not only looks stunning, but in terms of usability from a customer and owner point of view is a major step forward - all things going well, we should be able to give you a look in the next week.
Our online store design philosophy is simple - keep the focus on the products and make shopping easy. This means don't clutter the space, avoiding animated objects that distract attention and confuse - guide the visitor, don't make them have to work. It's amazing to see how many online shops make you register with them before you can even add something to your shopping cart....
Congratulations Kerry!
